Mangroves take root as Alsons Power, Maasim LGU mark Ocean Month

Alsons Power Group, through Sarangani Energy Corporation (SEC) and Siguil Hydro Power Corporation (SHPC), joined the Municipal Government of Maasim, Sarangani Province, in planting over 500 mangrove propagules in Tampat, Barangay Tinoto, capping the municipality’s Month of the Ocean observance under this year’s theme, “Sustaining Ocean Health, Sailing a Resilient Nation.”

Participants from Alsons Power Group, LGU-Maasim, coastal communities, and partner volunteers plant hundreds of mangrove propagules in Tampat, Barangay Tinoto, in celebration of the Month of the Ocean.

Led by the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office, with Vice Mayor Visitacion Nambatac, the activity brought together coastal residents, people’s organizations, and private sector partners in a shared push to restore mangroves that strengthen shoreline protection.

In coastal communities like Maasim, mangroves do more than line the shore. They stabilize coastlines, serve as nurseries for fish and marine life, and support livelihoods dependent on healthy ecosystems—making restoration efforts both ecological and economic investments.

“Alsons Power has been a consistent partner in Maasim’s environmental programs. From coastal cleanups to mangrove planting, this sustained support helps protect areas like Tinoto while keeping communities actively involved in caring for our marine resources,” Vice Mayor Nambatac said.

The mangrove planting further reinforces the company’s role in protecting the coastal ecosystem surrounding the Kamanga Marine Eco-Tourism Park and Sanctuary, a 43.85-hectare marine protected area known for its coral reefs and biodiversity. The sanctuary fronts SEC’s 237-megawatt baseload facility and lies adjacent to its jetty—highlighting the link between industrial operations and environmental stewardship.

For Alsons Power, these initiatives continue to build on years of environmental engagement in the municipality. Through SEC and SHPC, the group has implemented Adopt-an-Estero programs recognized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and supported “Scubasurero” cleanup drives that mobilize divers and volunteers for underwater and shoreline waste collection.

Beyond Maasim, Alsons Power has supported mangrove rehabilitation and coastal conservation efforts for more than two decades across its host communities. These include initiatives in Bolong, Zamboanga City; the Bayog River estuary in Iligan City; and Kawas, in Alabel, Sarangani, reflecting the Group’s long-standing commitment to protecting coastal ecosystems and strengthening climate resilience.

Maasim’s Month of the Ocean celebration highlighted the vital role of collaboration among local governments, communities, and partners in safeguarding marine and coastal ecosystems while fostering resilient communities for future generations.
