Alsons Power, PEF drive environmental education in Sarangani

Alsons Power Group, through its subsidiaries Sarangani Energy Corporation (SEC) and Siguil Hydro Power Corporation (SHPC) in Maasim, recently led an environmental education campaign in Maitum, Sarangani Province to raise awareness about the critically endangered Philippine Eagle. The Conservation Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) initiative was carried out in partnership with the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF).

The campaign engaged students, parents, teachers, and local stakeholders across two educational institutions. At Batian Elementary School, about 130 Grade 3 to 6 students joined the activity, along with their families, officers of the Parent-Teacher Association, and barangay officials. Meanwhile, Upo National High School (Malalag National High School Annex) hosted around 150 senior high school students and faculty members.

“Alsons Power and the Philippine Eagle Foundation specifically picked the communities in Batian and Upo in Maitum because we identified these as locations where our Philippine Eagles frequent,” according to Julia Estrada, Conservation Education Officer from the Philippine Eagle Foundation.

Officials from the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) also attended the sessions, underscoring robust multi-sectoral support for protecting Sarangani’s natural heritage—particularly the symbolic Philippine Eagle.

Maitum lies within the Mt. Busa Key Biodiversity Area, a critical ecological zone that also covers municipalities of Maasim and Kiamba. The area harbors more than 430 rare and threatened species, including newly discovered orchids unique to Mindanao. With its mossy forests and designation as both a Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) and an Important Bird Area (IBA), Mt. Busa ranks among the last remaining tracts of primary forest in southern Mindanao.

Guided by its brand promise, “We Power with Care,” Alsons Power continues to align its energy operations with ecological responsibility—working alongside communities, educators, and conservation partners to protect biodiversity and cultivate the next generation of environmental stewards.
