Alsons Power empowers youth to become environmental stewards

Students and partners come together for Alsons Power’s environmental education activity at Perrett Central Integrated School in Maitum, Sarangani Province.

Everyone has a role to play in protecting the environment, and the youth have the power to lead the way by shaping habits, inspiring communities, and driving meaningful action for a more sustainable future.

Recognizing the important role of young people in environmental conservation, Alsons Power brought together more than 100 students and teachers from Perrett Central Integrated School in Barangay Kalaong, Maitum, Sarangani Province, for an environmental education activity focused on river conservation.

Held in celebration of World Rivers Day under the theme “Rivers for Life,” the activity highlighted the vital role of healthy rivers in sustaining communities, biodiversity, and wildlife, while encouraging students to take an active role in protecting local waterways and ecosystems.

The event formed part of Alsons Power’s continuing Conservation Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) program, implemented through Sarangani Energy Corporation (SEC) and Siguil Hydro Power Corporation (SHPC) in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) Sarangani, the Municipal Government of Maitum, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR-CENRO) Kiamba.

Students from Grades 8 to 10 explored the interdependence of rivers, forests, wildlife habitats, and communities. Discussions on Philippine eagle and wildlife conservation, as well as El Niño awareness and preparedness, expanded the conversation to biodiversity protection and the impacts of prolonged dry conditions on water resources and livelihoods.

Maitum students engage in discussions on caring for their natural environment.

Last month, Alsons Power also brought CEPA to James Alfred Strong Integrated School in Barangay Upo, Maitum.

Together, these initiatives strengthen environmental awareness among young people in communities surrounding the Mt. Busa landscape, a key biodiversity area spanning parts of Sarangani and South Cotabato.

Through SEC and SHPC, Alsons Power continues to work with schools, communities, and government partners to deepen understanding of the links among water resources, forests, wildlife, climate, and community well-being, while inspiring the next generation to help protect these vital natural assets.
