“Work is the part that you do for your company and your daily living. Wellness is the portion that you owe to yourself and your future. To meet the demands of both, you must put yourself in between.”
JP Holgado (WESM Compliance Supervisor)

What would a typical day be like in your current position?
I’m John Paul Palma Holgado, a Registered Electrical Engineer. I am working under Alsons Power Supply Corporation as a Compliance Officer since June 17, 2019. Before I took my current position, I was a Trader or Load Dispatcher for Coal and Diesel Plant Operations from June 22, 2015, to June 16, 2019.
Handling WESM compliance is an interesting task since I am dealing with the regulations, taking remedial actions to prevent financial consequences, and gaining much learning and experience from my superiors and colleagues. I would say that there are no dull moments in my job because every day is a fun-filled experience.
How do you define work-life balance in your perspective?
Work is the part that you do for your company and your daily living. Wellness is the portion that you owe to yourself and your future. To meet the demands of both, you must put yourself in between.
How does your hobby benefit you in your work?
I’ve had so much love for badminton since 2017. I remember starting as a beginner when I was just wearing running shoes and had no personal rackets back then. But my passion for this sport has grown to the point that I invested in high-end rackets and apparel, undergone a training series, and have been joining tournaments until now.
Badminton has helped me become a better version of myself in all aspects: (1) it keeps me fit and active; (2) it helps me deal with the pressure since it is also a mind game; (3) it is teaching me how to celebrate wins and accept losses in life; and (4) I get to know more friends and professionals because of it.
The only downside of this sport, for me, is that it is somehow costly. Because every time you play you have to pay for the court and shuttlecocks. And if you are a super fanatic like me, you got to deal with apparel that costs you ten thousand pesos above. But expenses are nothing if you experienced winning tournaments and have your medals after.
Have you recently become a part of the company’s sports activities program?
I have participated in two competitions during my time at the company: the Annual Sports Friendly Competition and the Iligan Bay Chamber of Industries (IBCI) Sports Festival.
What suggestions would you offer to your colleagues?
To my co-employees in PBU, I encourage you to start investing in sports activities, wellness programs, or the like. Perhaps you might be thinking that you have no extra time for these. But I tell you, if you discovered something extraordinary about yourself during the pandemic, then you are more capable of what you can achieve today.
