Alsons Power Transitions Diesel Plant into Solar Facility

Alsons Power, the Alcantara Group’s power business unit, is advancing its renewable energy initiatives with the transformation of its 55 MW diesel power plant, Southern Philippines Power Corporation (SPPC), in Alabel, Sarangani into a 98.7 MWac solar power facility. The development will be performed in two phases beginning in the second quarter of 2026

The transition of SPPC from diesel to solar reflects Alsons Power’s commitment to delivering reliable and affordable energy while supporting the country’s shift to more sustainable power sources. By repurposing existing infrastructure, the company is able to optimize assets, accelerate project development, and contribute to the Philippines’ renewable energy targets.

Alsons Power recently signed the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract with Sinohydro Corporation Limited and POWERCHINA Philippines Corporation for the Phase 1 of the 45 MWac SPPC Solar Power Project in Alabel, Sarangani. Leading the signing ceremony were Alsons Power President and CEO Antonio Miguel B. Alcantara (3rd from right) and POWERCHINA Asia Pacific President Zhou Jiayi (3rd from left).

Also present from Alsons Power were Senior Vice President and Business Manager for Generations Jose Luis R. Angco (rightmost) and Vice President for Business Development and Project Execution Jason D. Soberano (second from right). Representing POWERCHINA were Philippines CEO Zhao Changjie (2nd from left)and Philippines Director Li Hongjiang (leftmost).

The Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract for Phase 1 of the project for 45 MWac was awarded to Sinohydro Corporation Limited and POWERCHINA Philippines Corporation, which will handle the offshore and onshore EPC scopes of the project. Both firms are subsidiaries of POWERCHINA, a global leader in infrastructure development and clean energy solutions.

“We are excited to begin the transition of our fossil fuel assets into renewable energy facilities,” said Antonio Miguel Alcantara, Chief Executive Officer of Alsons Power. “This marks more than the start of a major project. It is a decisive step toward a more diversified energy portfolio and a more energy-secure future.”

The Phase 1 of SPPC Solar is among the winning projects in the Green Energy Auction Program Round 4 (GEAP-4), securing offtake and reinforcing its long-term viability.

POWERCHINA, one of the world’s largest power construction enterprises with business in more than 130 countries and regions, brings extensive experience in investment and financing, design and engineering, construction, and operations across clean and low-carbon energy, water resources, and infrastructure.

“We are confident that our partnership with POWERCHINA, given its strong track record and technical expertise, will ensure the successful completion of SPPC Solar, ahead of our GEAP-4 delivery target in September 2027,” Alcantara added. “This collaboration reinforces our commitment to support the country’s energy transition and build a more sustainable and resilient power system.”

In parallel, development activities for Phase 2 are progressing, including the evaluation of integrated solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) configurations. The planned BESS component is expected to enhance grid stability, support peak shaving, and address solar intermittency. This will improve the project’s reliability, strengthen its revenue potential and bankability, and position it as a more resilient and future-ready asset within the Alsons Power’s growing renewable energy portfolio.

Once completed, the 98.7 MWac solar facility is expected to generate enough electricity to power nearly 104,000 homes, providing a meaningful boost for communities in Mindanao and a strong step forward in the country’s renewable energy journey.

“SPPC Solar highlights our commitment to evolve with the country’s energy needs. We are not only expanding our renewable portfolio but we are strategically transforming our existing assets to create long-term value and sustainable benefits,” Alcantara said.
