Alsons Power Restores Operations of SEC’s Unit 1 Following Magnitude 7.8 Mindanao Earthquake

Immediately after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao on June 8, 2026 offshore of Sarangani Province, Alsons Power activated its emergency response and business continuity protocols across its operations, mobilizing response teams and conducting comprehensive facility inspections.

While technical teams conducted facility assessments, the company quickly deployed its Community Relations and Human Resources teams to support employees and coordinate with government agencies, local government units, and indigenous communities as response and recovery efforts continued across Mindanao.

“Our priority is the safety and well-being of our employees, their families, and the communities we serve,” Alsons Power Chief Executive Officer Antonio Miguel B. Alcantara said. “At the same time, we are working closely with local government agencies to assess the situation on the ground and determine how we can best support ongoing relief and recovery efforts.”

The Alsons Power Group’s Sarangani Energy Corporation (SEC) owns and operates the 237-MW coal-fired power plant in Maasim, Sarangani Province. Within three days of the earthquake, Alsons Power restored the operations of Unit 1 of SEC for 118.5-megawatt (MW) baseload capacity underscoring the company’s agility in responding to emergencies and ensuring the continued delivery of reliable power to the grid.

SEC’s engineering, operations, and maintenance teams have been working around the clock to assess equipment, carry out the necessary repairs, and conduct rigorous testing of critical plant systems to restore its 118.5 megawatt (MW) Unit 2 urgently.

“Our teams are working tirelessly to complete the necessary evaluations, preparations, and repairs needed to safely return the plant to full operations at the soonest possible time,” Alcantara emphasized.

Meanwhile, inspections at the Company’s Siguil Hydro Power Plant (SHPC), also located in Maasim, indicated no major structural damage to the powerhouse, control building, intake structure, and other major plant facilities. SHPC operates a 14.5-megawatt (MW) run-of-river hydroelectric facility located at the Siguil River basin in Maasim, Sarangani Province.

The 107-MW Western Mindanao Power Corporation (WMPC) in Zamboanga City and the 105-MW Mapalad Power Corporation (MPC) in Iligan City remain operational and ready to support grid reliability. Both plants were not significantly affected by the earthquake due to their distance from the epicenter.

Alsons Power is working closely with local government units, emergency responders, government agencies, and NGCP as assessments and recovery efforts progress across the region. The Group stands ready to extend assistance where needed as communities across Mindanao continue to recover from the effects of the earthquake.

“Our focus is clear: safeguard our people, support our communities, and restore our facilities safely and responsibly. We will continue to work alongside government and industry partners to help ensure a swift and resilient recovery for the region,” Alcantara stressed.
