Driven by resilience, innovation, and strategic growth, 2024 was a remarkable year for the Alsons Power Group, a key player in the energy sector in Mindanao. Reflecting on the company’s achievements, Antonio Miguel B. Alcantara, CEO of Alsons Power, emphasized the Group’s commitment to delivering value to its stakeholders and communities. “Our goal is to provide greater benefits to our customers, shareholders, communities, and employees, staying true to our promise to power with care,” he said during the Group’s First Quarter Townhall Meeting.
Alcantara emphasized the vital role of collaboration within Alsons Power and the broader Alcantara Group in fueling the company’s ongoing success. “Our achievements in 2024 are just the foundation,” he stated. “By leveraging collaboration and a shared vision, we aim to turn today’s challenges into opportunities for a more sustainable and prosperous future.”
Expanding and Diversifying its Power Asset Portfolio
Alsons Power made significant strides in 2024, reinforcing its position as a trusted player in the Philippine energy sector. Reaffirming its renewable energy commitment, it completed the 14.5 – megawatt (MW) Siguil Hydro Power Plant in Maasim, Sarangani and progressed in the development of the 37.8-MW Sindangan-Zambo River Power Plant and the 53-MW Bago Hydro Power Plant, which are both slated for construction in 2025. These milestones emphasize Alsons Power’s focus on expanding its renewable energy portfolio. The company is also intensifying its solar energy efforts, with plans to launch its first large-scale solar power plant in the first half of 2025. “We are rapidly advancing our solar power initiatives and remain committed to strengthening our project pipeline,” said Alcantara.
Phase 1 of the company’s 95.2-MW Bohol In-Island Diesel Power Station located in the municipality of Ubay is also nearing completion, marking a major step in its strategic expansion outside Mindanao. This facility is designed to provide a reliable backup power source for consumers in Bohol, ensuring continued electricity supply during times when the province is isolated from the Visayas grid due to calamities or natural disasters. Alcantara added, “This project will capitalize on opportunities in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market and Ancillary Reserve market over the next 3 to 5 years, until additional plants are developed to address demand-supply gaps in the region.”
Powering Mindanao and beyond

Alsons Power’s Sarangani Energy Corporation remains one of the most cost-efficient baseload power sources in Mindanao, maintaining its competitive edge for the past three years.
On the market front, Alsons Power has strategically capitalized on favorable market conditions to strengthen its position in the energy sector. The company has also maximized its involvement in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) and Reserve Markets. Notably, the reactivation of Unit 1 of Mapalad Power Corporation (MPC) diesel power plant in Iligan City will enable the Group to further tap into the ancillary reserve market. The Western Mindanao Power Corporation (WMPC) in Zamboanga City continues to be a critical asset in stabilizing the region’s power supply, enhancing Alsons Power’s role in the region’s energy infrastructure.
Alsons Power’s RES Unit has gained considerable traction, securing key clients like Holcim Philippines and Metro Retail Stores Group, Inc. with an aggregate contracted capacity of 43 Megawatts. Looking ahead to 2025, the company is focused on significantly expanding its market share in the Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) market. Aiming to further solidify its position in the sector, Alcantara expressed confidence in growing its customer base: “We are committed to strengthening our market presence and expanding our power asset portfolio.”
Unlocking Potential and Empowering Progress
Alsons Power deepened its community and environmental impact in 2024 through meaningful initiatives that uplift lives and preserve natural resources. The company facilitated TESDA training programs for over 150 individuals from Sarangani and Zamboanga, empowering them with skills for sustainable livelihoods. It extended its commitment to education by donating resources to more than 50 schools and providing scholarships to 400 deserving students. Healthcare also took center stage, with over 2,000 individuals benefiting from medical missions and dental health checkups. On the environmental front, Alsons Power planted more than 15,000 trees under its Watershed Enhancement Program and hosted the inaugural Siguil River Watershed Summit, bringing together stakeholders to champion the protection of vital water resources. These efforts reflect the company’s dedication to nurturing both people and the planet.

Farmers Rebeccah Saluntay, Karen Galante, and Edilyn Tinagak from Sitio Datal Basak in Maasim proudly carry freshly harvested coffee cherries during the Coffee Harvest Festival in Maasim, Sarangani. Coffee production is a key agro-forestry component of Alsons Power Group’s Watershed Enhancement Project, fostering sustainable livelihood.
