The Alsons Power Group- Mindanao’s first and most experienced independent power producer, recently awarded the US $280 million engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for Section 2 of the 210 Mega Watt (MW) Sarangani Energy Corporation (SEC) baseload coal-fired power plant in Maasim, Sarangani Province to the Yokohama, Japan-based global engineering firm JGC Corporation and its local subsidiary JGC Philippines, Inc. Signatories of the EPC contract were: (from left) JGC Corporation Director Hiroyuki Miyoshi, Alsons Consolidated Resources (ACR) Inc. Chairman and President Tomas I. Alcantara, and JGC Philippines President Antonio Cabrera.

To mark the occasion, JGC Corporation presented Mr. Alcantara with a Daruma – a traditional Japanese “goal doll” representing the embodiment of a specific goal or objective. Mr. Alcantara painted one of the Daruma’s blank eyes to signify the signatories’ commitment to the completion of Section 2 of the SEC power plant. The other blank eye of the Daruma will be filled-in upon the completion of the project.
SEC section 1 began operating in April 2016 providing 105 MW of baseload power to over three million residents of Sarangani Province, General Santos City and other key areas in Mindanao. Upon its targeted completion in April 2019, SEC Section 2 is set to contribute another 105 MW baseload power to three million residents of South Cotabato, Cagayan de Oro City, and other growing population centers in Mindanao. The US $570 million SEC power plant is the single largest investment in Sarangani Province and the entire Region 12.
